Correspondence and records, January - March, 1782, of Jonathan Lawrence and Melancton Smith, who were contractors for supplying Continental Army posts north of Poughkeepsie (N.Y.), including Fort Herkimer, Saratoga, Albany, Fort Plain, Great Barrington, and Schenectady. The collection includes letters to and from various officers and subcontractors; 104 requisitions, receipts, and victualling returns for the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment; ca. 70 accounts of provisions, forage, wood, etc., supplied to various posts; their contract, dated December 21, 1781, with Robert Morris, and contracts with various subcontractors; requisitions and receipts of Captain Henry Benson and Abraham Bloodgood; account books, instructions about ration allowances, and other miscellaneous papers.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
